Discontent

May 23, 2026

Lately I feel that more people around me are feeling discontent or even anger towards our world and how things have transpired.

It's easy to just conclude, OK their feelings are valid and let them be so.

Yet, I challenge that notion that we should simply accept one's feelings as the final truth. For there are other perspectives.

This is nothing to do with one's intelligence - well, perhaps ironically, the ones who are more intelligent tend to feel a bit of despair about the world.

I tend to feel that this is linked to one's ego - which are supported by one's beliefs. By going down a particular avenue, beliefs tend to get stronger.

Yet when the world does not evolve or change in the way one desires, I believe this gap is causing a lot of this anguish.

Something simple I realised a while ago. Let go of your intelligence. Let go of your ego. Simply withhold judgement until fully processing all information.

I feel that these days, we are so quick to react to anything that doesn't conform to our worldview, we forget that we live in a world with so many perspectives.

There is a lot of "romanticism" - a yearning for the world that was, but is now quite different. Don't we all think that we once had some better experiences in the past - yet they are simply memories (with a rose-tinted lens).

The reality is that the world of today is so different. Without stressing on the topic again, AI has changed the world quite a lot in the last 2 years. Ultimately, if this is the way the world as a system evolves, then this is just a fact for us to accept.

The sooner we let go of our ego, and live the world as "experiencers", our feelings become muted, especially our negative emotions.

In fact, I believe our positive emotions return - we are once again able to smell the roses, find joy in simple things.

Once our emotions are balanced, and the mind is at ease, our wise self returns. This is the self that is able to make our best judgements, including our use of discretion, to make exceptions despite our beliefs.

This is when we embody the beauty of being a human.
